With Penn State's win over LSU in the Capital One Bowl and Ohio State slowing down Oregon, the Big 10 is no longer the official laughingstock of the college football world (here's looking at you, Pac 10). All of the pundits said that in order for the Big 10 to gain respectability, the conference "big boys" needed to step up and win meaningful bowl games. Mission:accomplished. What the weekend did for the Buckeyes was springboard them to a national title run in 2010. They will undoubtably be a preseason top 5 team and to say they play a manageable schedule would be an understatement. Terrelle Pryor looks like he finally gets it and will be one of nine returning offensive starters, and should the dominoes fall the right way (in other words: not fall), Ohio State could boast arguably the nations top defense. Things are all well in Columbus, Ohio. At least until Marshall invades the Horseshoe.

Postseason Awards

The college football regular season is over. Yes, i know that when you play Oregon there's always the chance you could potentially be blinded due to their "lightning" colored uniforms, but fear not. But just in case they do, make sure your pair of Oakleys are handy. I've watched Oregon several times and have truly been impressed just once. The key to stopping Oregon is simple: don't allow them to run the football. Last time i checked, Ohio State boasts one of the premier run defenses in the country. Problem solved. My mathematical formula for the game: 20 points + 0 offensive turnovers = a nice bouquet of roses to display in the Woody Hayes Center

Don't Become Michigan Fans

If you ask Michigan fans today who their chief rival is, they will tell you it is without question Ohio State. Ask them 8 years ago? Michigan State. Fans are a funny breed. When Michigan dominated the rivalry in the 90's, they took the rivalry for granted. Now that the tide has turned, Ohio State fans aren't viewing the rivalry quite the same as they did 10 years ago. They look at the schedule every year and the Michigan game isn't "the big one". Thank goodness Ohio State has a coach who understands the magnitude of the rivalry. Thank goodness fans aren't the ones competing on the field. As long as Jim Tressel is the head coach of Ohio State, victories over Michigan will continue to matter.

Mens Basketball Primed For Big 10 Title Run

The 2009 college basketball season is officially upon us and there is certainly reason to think that it should be an exciting one in Columbus. For starters, there's the fact that OSU returns 10 scholarship players from last season. Translation: no rebuilding necessary for coach Thad Matta. Second, there's Evan Turner. The 6'7 junior held off certain NBA riches for at least one year in hopes of improving his overall game and leading his team to a Big Ten title and deep run into March Madness. But the the most important aspect of this team could quite possibly be the return of David Lighty, arguably the team's best defender. Before a broken foot cut short Lighty's season last year, OSU arguably had the Big Ten's best defense. With Lighty back and fully healthy, expect more of the same. Michigan State is clearly the cream of the Big Ten crop and Purdue is not far behind, but this Ohio State team is talented enough to top both of them when it is all said and done.

Tressel The Chess Player

Imagine, if you will, Jim Tressel as a chess player. He is a very good and smart chess player. Over his years of playing chess he has developed an immaculate and systematic scheme in which he feels like if he does it successfully, he is going to beat you every time. You are also a good chess player, but unlike Jim Tressel you dont have a formula by which to win. You play each game different. Sometimes more agressive if you know an opponents weakness and are confident you can beat him quickly. Other times you hold back some, knowing that your opponent is strong and the one who makes the first mistake will probably lose. You play Jim Tressel once a day for two weeks. He wins all 14 times. He absolutely destroys you the first week, but the second week it gets more and more competitive each day. Finally you beat him...you beat him regularly. You have figured out that Jim Tressel does the SAME EXACT THING EVERY TIME HE PLAYS. You know that at the beginning of the chess match he'll start out by moving different pieces, but at certain points of the game you have figured him out and you know which player he's going to move, where he's going to move it, and what his next move will be. It is obvious to you, obvious to everyone else, yet Jim Tressel seems oblivious to it. When you ask him about it afterwards, he simply says "well, i just need to go study and get better". The next time you beat him, he says "there were some things that i did that i probably shouldnt have done, but the important thing is that I learn". Yet again, you beat Jim Tressel. Jim, what happened this time? Why did you move the Rook instead of the queen for a sure-fire checkmate? Jim Tressel replies, "well, it just seemed like the right thing to do".

What I Learned Over The Weekend

With the exception of Ohio State, the Big 10 conference is simply bad. Should Ohio State play up to their capability, they should waltz through the Big 10 schedule unscathed and be headed for a Rose Bowl date vs the Pac 10 champ. Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern: you're awful. Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan State: enjoy your 6 win season. Michigan: hey, atleast you wont be 3-9. Iowa and Penn State: you're okay, but still no match for a Buckeye team playing their A-game. Having just purchased tickets for an October 31st matchup with New Mexico State, i have extremely happy with the prospect of seeing an OSU team that will be 8-1 and possibly a top 5 team in the country. Enjoy the ride, Buckeye fans..it'll be a fun one.

Fire Tressel?? i think not

By now we all know the story. USC rolls into town and escapes with an 18-15 win. It is Ohio State's sixth straight loss against a Top 10 team. Facebook status', Twitters, and message boards are a dumpster fire. All proclaiming the same message: Tressel cant win the big one. He has to go. You want to fire Tressel? fine, go ahead. But be careful what you wish for, OSU fan. Unreasonable OSU fan will tell you "yeah, Tress can win the charmin-soft Big 10 and get you to a BCS bowl, but we expect national championships!". People, do you have any idea whatsoever how hard it is to win a national title? Sure, Florida has made it look simple, winning two of the past three, but it isnt NEARLY that easy. Alabama has a fan base who expects a national title every year. Quick, name me the last time they won one! Anyone?? 1992. Notre Dame? 1988. The Texas Longhorns, one of the winningest programs in college football history have only been crowned national champions four times. To expect a national championship every year is simply unreasonable and incredibly idiotic. To expect to compete for one every year is a completely different story.

This past football weekend saw #3 ranked USC downed by unranked Washington, and #7 ranked BYU blasted at home by unranked Florida State. I ask you this, Buckeye nation: Would you rather have a coach lose 1 game every year against a top 10 team or 1 game every year when they are a 14 point favorite? Think about this.... Other than the 2004 Northwestern and 2007 Illinois games, name me one game where Jim Tressel has lost a game his team was favored to win by more than a touchdown. Dont think too hard. The answer is ZERO. Folks, quite simply put, Jim Tressel wins every game he should, and his teams are ALWAYS in a position to compete for a national championship. I can live with that.

Saine's Comments Tell All

When asked on Saturday to rate the offensive line's performance, running back Brandon Saine smiled and said that he thought they did a good job. That he's "not going to say anything bad about them"..... uhhh translation, please? If Brandon Saine REALLY thought that his offensive line did a good job, then the last sentence was completely unnecessary...right? What Saine said (or didnt say) really didnt need saying at all. Anyone with any knowledge about the game of football and recent OSU history knows and saw that Ohio State's offensive line has some serious issues. To a man, every single offensive lineman for Ohio State had at least 2 inches and 20 pounds on their Navy counterparts. Did that advantage allow OSU's offensive line to dictate the tempo and rule the line of scrimmage? I think not. Clear lanes for our running backs were few and far between. Our quarterbacks were harrassed and pressured all game long. All i can say is thank goodness the fastest man on the team is our quarterback.

Barkley at QB makes me feel better about USC game, but not that much

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Joseph McCarthy, and i am the new executive producer of The Buckeye Show on Scoreonair.com. I am a BIG Ohio State fan, but as you will soon see, i'm a realistic one....

It was reported on ESPN today that USC coach Pete Carroll has named true freshman Matt Barkley as his starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Many an OSU fan will take this news and engage in premature victory celebrations, having believed in their minds that Pete Carroll has just assured the Buckeyes a win over the hated Trojans. In the illustrious words of Lee Corso, "not so fast, my friend". Lest we forget, Mark Sanchez (now the starting QB of the New York Jets) was making just his third career start when the 4th ranked Buckeyes ran into the buzzsaw known as the L.A Coloseum. Lest we forget, USC boasts arguably the best and deepest offensive line in all of college football. Lest we forget, USC returns (at least) 4 tailbacks who 118 other Division 1A programs would thank their lucky stars to have on their team. Lest we forget..Jim Heacock is STILL the defensive coordinator of Ohio State.

Now many of you will be quick to point out things like "Barkley is just a freshman", "it's in the 'shoe at night", and my personal favorite " but USC needs to replace 9 defensive starters". Folks, this is USC. There's not a football program out there who has recruited better in the past 5 years. USC is oozing with talent. They'll be just fine on defense. Of all people, Ohio State fans should know this. Headed into the 2006 season, Ohio State faced a similar dilemna: replace 9 new defensive starters. Gone from the 2005 defense were A.J Hawk, Anthony Schlegel, Bobby Carpenter, Donte Whitner, and Ashton Youboty. How on earth were they going to replace all of that talent? Well, as we all know, the 2006 defense statistically was just as good if not better than the 2005 unit.

This game will come down to one thing: can Ohio State stop USC's running game? of all the things that happened in last years debacle, the one thing that sticks out in my mind is seeing USCs running backs constantly gash our run defense. With a freshman quarterback, the nations top offensive line and stable of running backs, Pete Carroll is going to run the football as often as he can get away with. I know it, you know it, and Jim Heacock knows it. However, you dont have to be a football expert to know that Jim Heacock tends to fall on the conservative side of the fence. He is perfectly content to sit in a 3-3-5 zone defense and wait for the opposing offense to make a mistake. I know this, you know this...and unfortunately, Pete Carroll knows it. Ohio State hasn't had an aggressive defense since Mark Dantonio roamed the sideline as Defensive Coordinator. Sure, we've seen glimpses of aggressiveness, but not consistently.

The fact that Ohio State plays Navy in week 1 means that USC will be the first team the Buckeyes will face with a consistent passing threat. I can't think of a worse scenario for the OSU secondary. This means that the first set of receiving threats you really have to worry about include Damian Williams, Ronald Johnson, David Ausberry, Blake Ayles, and Anthony McCoy. Talk about tall orders! If i'm Jim Heacock, i take my chances on the outside and load 7 or 8 in the box, bring the heat, and force Barkley to beat us. Unfortunately, recent history leads me to believe this won't be the case.

I'm not predicting doom for Ohio State against USC nor am i garaunteeing victory, but i definitely am not ready to reserve my parade spot in Pasadena just yet....

The buckeye show is back and all new, new topics and a new look.
